On 19 November, 2024, the Blue Thread initiative was launched in a webinar held by UNESCO-IOC within the framework of the SEA BEYOND project.

The launch webinar is also available in French, Portuguese and Spanish.

First launched as an initiative to connect Venetian artisans committed to sustainability prior to the Ocean Literacy World Conference in Venice in June 2024, the Blue Thread is now going global: it aims recognizes and celebrates individuals, organizations, and businesses that actively promote the principles of the Venice Declaration for Ocean Literacy. The Blue Thread serves as a symbol of commitment to sustainable ocean stewardship, inclusive participation, and innovative approaches to solving ocean-related challenges.

This global network aims to connect those whose work is aligned with the principles of the Venice Declaration and fosters collaboration to amplify the impact of Ocean Literacy efforts around the world. By displaying the Blue Thread label, members showcase their dedication to environmental sustainability, ocean health, and fostering a deeper understanding of our vital connections to the marine world.

How to Join the Blue Thread Initiative

Do you or your organization actively work towards promoting sustainable ocean stewardship? The Blue Thread network invites individuals, organizations, educators, small businesses, and local associations to join us in advancing the principles of the Venice Declaration.

To apply, submit your proposal through our online application form, detailing how your work aligns with the principles of the Venice Declaration, such as educational impact, equity and inclusion, and innovation. Each application will be reviewed by an Evaluation Board, and successful applicants will earn the right to display the Blue Thread label, signifying their commitment to a sustainable future for our ocean.
