Ocean Dialogues | United Nations Ocean Conference

The Ocean Literacy Dialogues, starting in Lisbon at the United Nations Ocean Conference in June 2022, will be a series of open participative events from 28th June to 1st July to take stock of the development of Ocean Literacy across the world through an inclusive and holistic approach, with the aim to provide concrete opportunities for new joint actions to re-imagine humanity’s relationship with the ocean.

The events will take place in Ciência Viva – Pavilhão do Conhecimento. Application or registration to the events are free of charge, however, all events have limited capacity, and registration is required.

** COVID-19 sanitary measures and restrictions: The events will follow the COVID-19 updated guidelines present in the most recent policy.

Day 1: Workshop on Science Communication and Blue Storytelling

Description:

This 3 hours workshop will be an immersive and interactive workshop that will provide information, skills, and ready-to-use tools for youth from EU4Ocean, Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs), and other networks to better develop key messages and use storytelling when promoting narratives about the ocean.

This workshop will count on communication experts from traditional and social media that will incentivize and empower members of the youth communities to effectively communicate with the ocean.

By participating in the workshops, attendees can expect:

  • To learn more about the lessons learned from successful ocean campaigns
  • To understand the diversity of communication tools and how they are applicable to science communication
  • To learn more about storytelling and how to amplify the reach of messages

This workshop is limited to a maximum of 30 participants from all over the world. Interested participants may register via the link below – as well as apply to become part of the Youth4Ocean network.

Day 2 (morning): Sea Beyond Final Ceremony

Description:

The Sea Beyond project, promoted by the Prada Group and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) is an educational program developed to raise awareness of sustainability and ocean preservation across schools.

The second edition of the project promoted a series of Webinars led by IOC-UNESCO experts dedicated to teachers and students of ten schools from Brazil, China, Italy, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.

A contest was also launched inviting students and teachers to freely interpret one of the ten challenges of the Ocean Decade. The projects will be selected by an international jury of “Sea Beyonders” and the winning school will be awarded on 29th June 2022, during the Final Ceremony in Ciência Viva – Lisbon during the occasion of the UN Ocean Conference.

The project, which has been supported by a percentage of the proceeds from the sales of the Prada Re-Nylon collection, underscores the Prada Group’s commitment to sustainable choices, in line with the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Day 2 (afternoon): Ocean Dialogues – Side-event

Description:

The high-level side event will be organized by the EU4Ocean Coalition in cooperation with IOC-UNESCO and allow the participation of different institutions from all over the world. The event marks the beginning of a process to look into the shared commitments that can be brought together to support ocean literacy across the globe and that will culminate at the next session of UNOC. The overarching objective is to include ocean literacy in the next iteration of high-level dialogues.

This dialogue will be widened beyond the community of ocean literacy to include different cultures and sectors of the society, in order to achieve the objectives of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). Decision-makers, journalists, entrepreneurs, educators, artists, and youth should be engaged and share their values and how ocean literacy impacts their fields of activity.

Day 4: Training for Policy-makers in Blue Curriculum

Description:

This 3 hours workshop will be composed of interactive sessions that will provide training, information, and tools for educational authorities, policy-makers, and curriculum developers on how to include Ocean Literacy in the national curriculum frameworks and educational policies around the world.

By participating in the workshops, attendees can expect:

  • To learn more about the vision for the 21st Century curriculum its process and bottlenecks
  • The concept of interdisciplinary and cross-cutting knowledge and flexibles strategies for a Blue Curriculum
  • How to identify and engage education stakeholders
  • How to influence and engage policymaking.
  • This workshop is limited to a maximum of 25 participants.
