Ocean Literacy highlights at UNOC3

We are pleased to share with you the highlights of the Ocean Literacy presence at the third UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3), held in Nice, France, from 2 to 13 June.

The Ocean Literacy programme of UNESCO-IOC was present through the One Ocean Science Congress and the United Nations Ocean Conference through a dedicated pavilion, “Beyond Borders: Ocean Futures”, hosted in partnership with the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB) and the Italian National Research Council for Marine Sciences (CNR-ISMAR). This space welcomed over 100,000 visitors, hosted more than 100 events, and brought together so many of you: showcasing the collective power of education, science, and community to shape a sustainable ocean future.

While the ocean is gaining increasing global attention as a key ally in the fight against climate change, it remains heavily underfunded: SDG14 is still the least financed of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Our team is working hard, in collaboration with so many of you, to close this gap through Ocean Literacy - empowering people to understand the ocean and take action for its protection. Ocean Literacy is increasingly proving to be both an accelerator and a cross-cutting tool to drive meaningful change.

Some of the achievements showcased at UNOC3 include strengthened global collaboration and networks, greater youth engagement, and enhanced partnerships with the private sector. You can discover more in this visual summary, and relive the spirit of this extraordinary experience by watching this short video.

We sincerely thank all of you for making this milestone possible, and we look forward to growing the Ocean Literacy movement together in the months and years to come.

As we continue mobilizing resources to advance ocean literacy worldwide, we’d love to hear from you. If you're interested in supporting our efforts financially, please reach out to our team!
