Description
The South America region of the Blue School Global Network works together with the Caribbean and North America regional coordination to strengthen the network. This is done by supporting national coordinators in sharing learnings and experiences, as well as providing tools for the orderly management of programs. In addition, we actively engage in raising awareness and building engagement with countries to encourage them to launch their own National Blue School programs.
The Caribbean Blue Schools Network, coordinated by IOCARIBE-UNESCO, supports Member States in integrating Ocean Literacy into education through regional collaboration, capacity development, and partnerships. The network works closely with national coordinators, educational authorities, and partners to strengthen Blue Schools implementation, facilitate the nomination of national coordinators and Ocean Literacy focal points, promote the exchange of educational resources and good practices, and connect schools with regional and global Ocean Decade initiatives. Current priorities include expanding national networks, supporting teacher engagement, strengthening partnerships, and fostering youth participation through Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) and collaborative educational activities.
History of success
IOCARIBE
Strengthening the Caribbean Blue Schools Network through Regional Coordination
Coordinated the regional onboarding and training of national Blue Schools coordinators, developing standardized tools, national action plans, reporting systems, and coordination mechanisms that support implementation across Member States. This work has contributed to strengthening the Caribbean Blue Schools Network and expanding national engagement.
Developing the Blue Schools Global Network Open Educational Resources Database
Led the coordination of an open-access educational resources database designed to support teachers, coordinators, and schools with high-quality Ocean Literacy materials. The database organizes resources by topic, educational level, language, sector relevance (schools, fisheries, tourism), and educational use, making it easier for educators across the Caribbean to identify practical materials adapted to their needs. This initiative also supports the identification of resource gaps and promotes knowledge sharing across the network.
Blue Schools CARIBE Newsletter and Regional Communication
Launched and coordinated the Blue Schools CARIBE Newsletter to strengthen communication among Member States, share funding and training opportunities, highlight successful initiatives, and promote collaboration across the regional network.
