Description
The Education Office of the Colombian Ocean Commission aims to strengthen education on marine and coastal issues in Colombia by fostering collaboration among institutions, programs, and educational initiatives at the local, regional, and national levels. To achieve this, it promotes educational innovation, coordinates efforts across different sectors, and highlights academic, scientific, and community-based initiatives to enhance ocean literacy and foster a bi-oceanic maritime awareness within the Colombian education system.
INVEMAR leads the “Blue Schools” strategy, based on the principles of Ocean Literacy and promoting knowledge, social ownership, and connection with the ocean through laboratories, learning groups, knowledge-sharing events, and assessments, with the potential to be scaled up nationwide.
INVEMAR promotes a vision of empowerment and ownership of the marine territory: Colombia is 50% ocean. Therefore, we seek to strengthen a “bi-oceanic” national perspective, in which new generations recognise the value of our oceans for well-being, culture, biodiversity, and sustainable development, and become committed actors in their protection. In this endeavour, Blue Schools provide an opportunity to connect students and communities with ocean knowledge and strengthen an ocean culture that contributes to building a more sustainable future.
History of success
Colombia has developed a wide range of valuable educational initiatives focused on the ocean. However, many teachers still lack the educational resources needed to effectively incorporate these topics into their classrooms. To address this need, the Colombian Ocean Commission (CCO) created Aula Bioceánica (Bi-Oceanic Classroom), an educational platform where educators can access a variety of teaching materials and resources to support the development of ocean-related lessons and promote ocean literacy.
