India Blue School Network
The National Coordinator for India was officially established in 2026.
24 Schools, 48 Teacher and over 1000 students and learners involved.
Description
Blue Schools India is part of the UNESCO-IOC Blue School Global Network, working to strengthen ocean literacy by helping learners understand how the ocean shapes our climate, freshwater, biodiversity, cultures, livelihoods, and future. Our vision is to make ocean literacy relevant to every learner, regardless of where they live.
In India, our objective is to integrate ocean literacy into existing school curricula through interdisciplinary, project-based learning that connects local environmental challenges with global ocean health. The network supports teacher capacity building, student leadership, community engagement, and partnerships across education, science, government, and civil society. Current initiatives include the national Blue Schools pilot, the development of ocean literacy resources, educator training, and youth-led action projects that inspire schools to take meaningful action for healthy oceans and sustainable communities.
At the regional level, the Middle East and Indian Ocean Coordination is in its early stages. Our aim is to support the establishment and growth of the Blue School Global Network by fostering collaboration among countries, facilitating knowledge exchange, identifying partners, and encouraging approaches to ocean literacy that reflect the rich cultural, ecological, and geographical diversity of the region. We recognize that the ocean is not only an environmental system but also a source of heritage, identity, traditional knowledge, livelihoods, and shared histories that connect communities across the Middle East and the Indian Ocean. By bringing together science, education, culture, and local knowledge, we seek to build a strong regional community that advances the goals of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030)
