Mexico Escuelas Azules

The National Coordinator for Mexico was officially established in 2022.

196 students, 17 schools, and 55 teachers were engaged in the 2025/26 school year. Through a full school-scale implementation model, the initiative has an estimated potential reach of 3,350 students.

Description

Escuelas Azules México has been working since 2022 to bring Ocean Literacy closer to schools, educators and communities throughout the country. As the National Coordination of the Blue Schools programme, we support the development of interdisciplinary and community-based projects, provide guidance to schools and teachers, develop educational resources, offer training opportunities, promote scientific outreach and encourage local action for the ocean.

The main goal for Escuelas Azules México in the state of Yucatán is to promote and instill ocean literacy by integrating knowledge about the oceans and their sustainability through projects carried out by students at the basic and upper-secondary education levels. A future objective is to incorporate ocean literacy into school curricula.

What began as a growing educational initiative is becoming a broader collaborative movement connecting educators, researchers, students, volunteers and communities around a shared belief: everyone, whether they live near the coast or far from it, can develop a meaningful connection with the ocean and contribute to its protection.

Its activities include providing training and courses on ocean culture to teachers, educators, service providers, professionals, and the general public to foster critical thinking, curiosity, and analysis regarding the issues affecting the oceans and their inhabitants. It also aims to act as agents of change, inspiring students to translate what they have learned into real-world actions to protect the oceans.

Today, our network continues to grow. Escuelas Azules México already has nine coordinators working across nine states of the country, and we are continuing to expand our presence to reach more communities and build a truly national network.

In 2026, Escuelas Azules México formally established itself as a non-profit civil association, creating the legal and organizational foundation needed to strengthen and sustain our mission. This important step allows us to seek and receive donations, grants and support from national and international partners, helping us expand our educational activities, reach more communities and create new opportunities for participation.

As we continue to grow, we believe that collaboration is essential. We are eager to build partnerships, exchange experiences and work alongside organizations, institutions and individuals who share our commitment to a future in which Ocean Literacy inspires knowledge, connection and action.

Together, we are growing a movement that brings the ocean closer to people—and people closer to the responsibility of caring for our shared planet. Nine states are only the beginning.

Examples of Blue School Projects in Mexico:

1. CET del Mar No. 8 – Mazatlán, Sinaloa

CET del Mar No. 8 has been part of Escuelas Azules México since the beginning and has worked with us for the past three years. Its commitment to mangrove conservation has grown over time: the school began by rehabilitating a nearby mangrove area, later developed an interpretive corridor to promote environmental education, and is currently carrying out a mangrove reforestation campaign. This project reflects how a long-term school commitment can evolve from local restoration into education and community action.

2. Secundaria Técnica No. 28 – Yucatán

Located on the coast of Yucatán, Secundaria Técnica No. 28 is developing the project “Sustainable Fisheries: Responsible Practices to Conserve Fishery Resources.” Through this initiative, students learn about the importance of sustainable fishing and responsible seafood consumption. The project encourages them to reflect on how everyday choices can contribute to the conservation of marine resources.

3. Colegio de Bachilleres del Estado de Quintana Roo, EMSaD Limones – Quintana Roo

Through experiential learning focused on mangroves, students at EMSaD Limones carry out activities that promote knowledge, appreciation and care for these important ecosystems. The project encourages students to understand mangroves as a key ecosystem in the coastal region of Quintana Roo and to recognize their importance for both nature and local communities. These projects represent just a small part of the growing work being developed by our Blue Schools across Mexico, demonstrating how Ocean Literacy can be transformed into meaningful local action.
