Description

The Africa and Nigeria National Coordination of the UNESCO-IOC Blue Schools Global Network (BSGN) is committed to building a generation of ocean-literate, environmentally responsible, and climate-resilient citizens. We work with schools, educators, government institutions, researchers, communities, and partners to integrate ocean literacy and sustainability into education inspiring young people to become active ocean and environmental stewards.

Our work focuses on teacher capacity building, the establishment of Blue School, ocean education, citizen science, mangrove restoration, clean-ups, biodiversity conservation, and community engagement. We also coordinate national participation in global environmental events such as World Ocean Day, World Mangrove Day, and International Coastal Cleanup Day and private sustainability activity.

Our strength lies in connecting science, culture, education, and community action. Through strong partnerships and hands-on learning, we empower schools to become centres of environmental leadership where students develop practical skills, lead conservation initiatives, and influence positive change within their communities.

Our impact is reflected in stronger environmental awareness, increased youth participation in sustainability initiatives, enhanced teacher capacity, and growing collaboration among schools and stakeholders to protect Nigeria's water resources and advance the Sustainable Development Goals. Together, we are nurturing future leaders and policy makers who understand that protecting the ocean is essential for sustainable development and the well-being of present and future generations.
