Ten Blue Stories

Inspiring Young Minds through Ocean Science and Storytelling

Ten Blue Stories: ocean science narrated to young people  (Dieci Storie Blu: le scienze del mare raccontate a ragazze e ragazzi) is an enchanting collection of educational stories developed by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO as part of its Ocean Literacy programme, within the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030). Currently available in Italian, the book is designed to introduce children to marine sciences through captivating narratives.

Bridging Science and Imagination

The book consists of ten delightful stories, each based on real-life experiences of Mediterranean researchers actively engaged in marine science. Oceanographers and biologists carefully selected ten research papers, which were then transformed into engaging stories by writers and illustrators following interviews with the researchers. Each narrative portrays the joys, adventures, uncertainties, and remarkable discoveries inherent in ocean science.

These stories offer children a glimpse into the daily lives of marine scientists, capturing the thrill of discovery and the adventurous spirit of fieldwork. From the excitement of uncovering a new species during the holidays to the courage required for a first dive, Ten Blue Stories celebrates both the scientific method and the human experience behind the research. By showcasing the boundless possibilities to contribute to the future of our planet, the book ultimately aims to inspire young readers to pursue their own careers in ocean science.
