Jamaica’s National Coordination for the Blue Schools Global Network engages schools, educators, ministries, and civil society partners to advance ocean literacy and student led “blue projects” that connect learning with real community impact. Working with IOCARIBE and fellow coordinators across the Caribbean, the network onboards and guides schools through the Blue School approach, supporting teachers with resources and training, and building partnerships that link science, culture, and local livelihoods to stewardship of our marine and coastal environments. This work aligns with the UN Decade of Ocean Science (2021–2030) and strengthens a growing regional network for knowledge-sharing, monitoring progress, and celebrating student innovation.
In Jamaica, coordination is grounded in practical collaboration, where classrooms are connected to scientists, local agencies, and community initiatives, so students not only understand the ocean’s role in climate resilience and sustainable development, as well as contribute to tangible solutions. There is a focus on equitable participation, teacher support, and evidence-based practice so every school can design a project that reflects its context, reach while meeting common BSGN principles. Together with IOCARIBE and the wider Atlantic and global Blue Schools community, we are building a coherent pathway for schools to register, act, and share results, making ocean literacy a lived experience for Jamaica and the Caribbean.
