The Blue Schools Mexico National Coordination leads the implementation of the Blue School programme across the country. Its mission is to promote ocean literacy and strengthen ocean culture within the Mexican education system, inspiring informed, responsible, and active participation in the protection of the ocean.
Founded in 2022 as part of the All-Atlantic Blue Schools initiative, the programme became formally integrated into the IOC network in 2024 and was recognized in 2025 as an Official Action of the United Nations Ocean Decade.
Through a collaborative approach that connects science, education, and community engagement, Blue Schools Mexico provides teacher training, educational materials, and guidance for schools seeking certification as Blue Schools. The programme supports interdisciplinary, locally relevant projects that link classrooms with marine and coastal realities, fostering awareness, stewardship, and sustainable practices.
By 2030, Blue Schools Mexico aims to consolidate a national network of 250 certified Blue Schools and train over 5,000 teachers in ocean literacy. The Coordination works closely with educators, researchers, and institutions to integrate ocean-related topics into national curricula and position Mexico as a regional leader in ocean literacy and sustainability education.
