The Blue Schools initiative in Honduras began as a local effort to integrate Ocean Literacy into school curricula in the Bay Islands. It later joined the All-Atlantic Blue Schools Network and, in 2025, officially became part of the Blue School Global Network. The program is now being implemented in schools within Honduras’ largest Marine Protected Area, the Bay Islands National Marine Park.
This is the first officially recognized Blue Schools programme in Central America. It is led by educator Timna Varela with Partners in Education Roatán (PIER), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education through the Bay Islands Department of Education.
In April 2025, the program officially launched with pilot schools in Roatán and Santos Guardiola, one of which is a member of the UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet). The initiative is closely linked with local environmental education efforts in the MPA, emphasizing teacher training, curriculum-integrated activities, and youth leadership to foster marine conservation.
