Lighthouse Projects
Lighthouse Projects are exemplary, inspiring ocean education initiatives that serve as reference models for Blue Schools worldwide. Each one has been carefully selected for demonstrating excellence across the full range of Blue School principles, and for being adaptable enough to be implemented by schools in different countries, languages and contexts.
A Lighthouse Project is more than a good idea. It is a tested, structured programme with a clear methodology, resources and evidence of impact. Lighthouse Projects may be recognised at national or regional level, according to the scale at which their model has demonstrated potential for transfer and adaptation.
A Lighthouse Project must
Demonstrate strong alignment with the Blue School criteria — including knowledge, action, values and community engagement;
Be educationally sound, with clear goals, methodology and resources adapted for school use;
Offer a replicable model that can be transferred and adapted to other schools at national or regional level;
Include mechanisms to support schools during implementation;
Show evidence of positive impact in student learning, community involvement and sustainability awareness.
Want to become a Lighthouse?
Projects interested in becoming a Blue School Lighthouse can submit an online application. Applications are reviewed against the five Lighthouse criteria by the Blue School Lighthouse Evaluation Committee. Where needed, applicants may be asked to provide additional evidence or clarification.
Projects meeting the criteria may be recognised at national or regional level, according to the demonstrated scale of transferability and capacity to support implementation.
